Powering the Future: GM’s Latest Solar Energy Partnership Supports Carbon Neutral Goals

General Motors (GM) has announced its largest #renewable energy purchase agreement yet, a 15-year deal with NorthStar Clean Energy. This agreement will support three GM assembly plants by sourcing renewable energy from NorthStar’s Newport Solar project in Newport, Arkansas. With a capacity of 180 megawatts, this solar project will help power GM’s Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, as well as the Wentzville Assembly site in Missouri.

This milestone supports GM’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2040. In 2022, the company confirmed it had secured the energy agreements needed to power all U.S. sites with 100% renewable electricity by the end of 2025. The Newport site alone generates enough electricity to power 30,000 homes annually.

“Expanding our renewable electricity portfolio is a major step toward reducing our #carbon footprint and advancing our #sustainability goals,” said Rob Threlkeld, GM’s director of global energy strategy. “This facility not only supports our renewable energy strategy but also highlights our commitment to a sustainable future for all.”

With this latest agreement, GM now sources renewable energy from 17 facilities across 11 states, making it the automotive industry’s largest buyer of renewable power by capacity. This effort is part of GM’s ongoing push to integrate sustainability into its operations and reduce its environmental impact.
