New Ultrasound Test Detects 96% of Ovarian Cancers, Study Finds

A #new ultrasound test, the IOTA ADNEX model, has been shown to detect 96% of #ovarian cancers in #postmenopausal women, significantly outperforming the current standard test in the UK, according to a study published in Lancet Oncology.

Led by Professor Sudha Sundar from the University of Birmingham, the study compared #six different diagnostic methods in a head-to-head trial. The IOTA ADNEX model, which assesses ultrasound features of ovarian lumps, proved to be the most accurate, identifying more cancers than the current risk of malignancy index (RMI1), which detects 83% of cases.

The research suggests that using the IOTA ADNEX protocol, performed by trained sonographers, could improve early detection of ovarian cancer, particularly in high-risk postmenopausal women. While the test may flag some non-cancerous cases as higher risk, experts, including NHS and patient groups, agree that the benefits of detecting more cancers outweigh this downside.

Annwen Jones OBE, Chief Executive at Target Ovarian Cancer, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and called for swift implementation of this more accurate test. Online resources have been created to help NHS sonographers receive the necessary training and certification.

This breakthrough could lead to faster, more effective treatment for women at higher risk of ovarian cancer.
