New Jersey Company Widens Recall of Cinnamon Contaminated with Lead

Gutierrez Distributor of Passaic, NJ, has expanded its recall of #ground cinnamon to include its Gutierrez brand, along with the previously recalled El Servidor Corp. brand.

The recall is due to elevated levels of lead found in the cinnamon, which can pose serious health risks. Long-term lead exposure in children can lead to permanent damage to the #central nervous system, resulting in #learning difficulties, #developmental issues, and other health problems. In adults, #chronic lead exposure can cause #kidney damage, #high blood pressure, and #cognitive issues.

The affected El Servidor Corp. ground cinnamon was distributed to New York retail stores starting on January 14, 2024, while the Gutierrez brand was sold to cash-and-carry customers. The product is packaged in a 1.5-ounce clear plastic bag. The recall followed a sample analysis by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which found elevated lead levels. Production and distribution have been halted as investigations continue.
