China's Approval of Gene-Edited Wheat Marks Progress in Opening GM Technology to Food Crops

China has recently approved the safety of #gene-edited wheat, marking a significant move in its cautious approach to #genetically modified ( #GM ) food crops. Unlike traditional genetic modification, gene editing alters existing genes to enhance performance, considered by some scientists as less risky.

China has been increasing approvals for GM crops like corn and soybeans for food security, but consumer concerns persist. The approval for disease-resistant wheat, a staple in Chinese cuisine, is a milestone as China is the largest producer and consumer of wheat globally

Additionally, new regulations for labeling GM crops in food products are expected. Alongside wheat, a new variety of GM corn with herbicide and insect resistance traits, as well as a higher-yielding gene-edited corn, received approval.  These safety certificates are valid for five years, reflecting China's aim to boost domestic production and reduce imports of grains.
