#Amazon is pushing its suppliers to be more sustainable to meet its goal of #net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. In its 2023 Sustainability Report, Amazon requires its "highest-emitting suppliers" to present decarbonization plans and show real progress. Suppliers who fail to comply may lose business with Amazon.

In 2023, Amazon produced 68.8 million tons of carbon emissions, with 51.76 million tons from its supply chain. To aid suppliers, Amazon launched the Amazon Sustainability Exchange, a free resource offering guidelines and tools for sustainability.
Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge in 2019, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040 with 500 other companies. Despite mixed results, including a 3 percent reduction in emissions in 2023, Amazon’s carbon footprint has increased by 34.5 percent since the pledge.
Kara Hurst, Amazon's chief sustainability officer, acknowledged the challenges, noting that progress will vary yearly due to business changes and growth. Still, Amazon remains committed to its environmental goals.
Amazon is not alone in this effort. Walmart's Project Gigaton, launched in 2017, encouraged its suppliers to reduce emissions. This February, Walmart achieved its goal of reducing 1 billion tons of emissions six years ahead of schedule.
