1PointFive, a carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) company, has entered into an agreement with Microsoft to sell 500,000 metric tons of #carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits over six years. This marks the largest single purchase of CDR credits enabled by Direct Air Capture (DAC) to date. The agreement supports Microsoft’s strategy to become carbon negative by 2030 and underscores the growing adoption of DAC technology as a key solution for achieving #net-zero emissions.

The CDR credits will be provided by STRATOS, 1PointFive’s first industrial-scale DAC facility, currently under construction in Texas. The captured carbon dioxide will be securely stored through subsurface saline sequestration and will not be used for oil and gas production. DAC offers a transparent and durable way to address emissions, particularly from hard-to-abate industries.
Michael Avery, President and General Manager of 1PointFive, praised the agreement as a landmark for DAC, highlighting Microsoft’s leadership in carbon removal and commitment to sustainability. He noted that the growing energy demand in the technology industry makes DAC an ideal solution for removing residual emissions and furthering climate goals.
Brian Marrs, Senior Director for Carbon Removal and Energy at Microsoft, emphasized the importance of projects like STRATOS in achieving the gigatons of removals needed this century. He stated that DAC is a crucial component of Microsoft’s carbon removal portfolio and their broader goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030.
This agreement illustrates how major corporations like Microsoft are integrating scalable DAC into their net-zero strategies, demonstrating the potential for DAC to play a significant role in global carbon reduction efforts.
